Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Nick Kyrgios was given an ill-timed point penalty for a code violation during the second set of his 7-6(4), 7-5 loss to Albert Ramos-Vinolas at Indian Wells on Saturday. The No. 24 seed had already been given a warning for knocking a ball out of the stadium earlier in the match, and when a linesperson believed he heard Kyrgios mutter an obscenity after Ramos-Vinolas saved a break point, he sauntered over to umpire Damien Dumusois to report it.

“Obviously I didn't say anything,” Kyrgios told reporters after the match. “You know, I'm the first person if I do something wrong that I will speak up if I did it. It was a pretty crucial time. I was obviously struggling out there.”

Ramos-Vinolas would save the remaining break points and hold serve.

“I was trying to just fight and hang in,” Kyrgios said. “I created chances. I'm not going to say that contributed to the loss or anything like that, but definitely didn't really help in the second set, for sure.”

Other early winners on Saturday at Indian Wells were 8th-seeded Richard Gasquet, 26th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov, 12th-seeded Milos Raonic and Federico Delbonis.

Tomas Berdych ended Juan Martin del Potro’s trop to the desert by defeating him in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-2.
