The 30-year-old Murray will replace Marcelo Melo on the top spot. Melo lost his doubles match at the Miami Open with partner Ivan Dodig. With Melo and Dodig not reaching the quarterfinals, Melo will lose cumlative ranking points allowing Murray to take the top ranking this week.

Jamie Murray and his partner Bruno Soares recently won the Australian Open this year.

"Last night I went to bed wondering if that was the closest I would ever get," Murray on Instagram. "Today driving in the car my phone started to go crazy. #1"

Murray will become the first UK player ever to rise to a World No. 1 ranking since computerized rankings were started for singles in 1975 and in doubles in 1984.

Virginia Wade was the last UK player to hold a World No. 1 ranking. She did that in doubles back in 1973.

Jamie and Andy Murray’s mother Judy Murray posted the following celebratory message on Twitter.
