18-time major winner Chris Evert is expressing some surprise that Madison Keys hasn’t been able to build on the success she achieved last year when she reached her first career Grand Slam semifinal at the 2015 Australian Open and climbed to a career-high ranking of 16.

“Madison Keys lost to Nicole Gibbs,” Evert said, in reference to Keys' second-round loss to the world No. 95 here at the BNP Paribas Open on Friday. “I watched that match, and was surprised that Madison still doesn't seem to have everything together mentally, emotionally, physically. Just surprised at that loss and the errors she made in that match."
To be fair, the 21-year-old did reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the round of 16 at the U.S. Open last season. She has reached the second week at four of her last five majors, certainly nothing to scoff at for a young player.
But things have taken a turn to the downside of late. In January Keys told media that she suffered a freak elbow injury when she fell whilst on vacation. Last December she announced that she’d be parting ways with Lindsay Davenport, which was a much celebrated player-coach pairing.
Keys, now working with Jesse Levine, has only played two events because of injury this season. She fell in the round of 16 at the Australian Open and dropped her second-round match with Nicole Gibbs here at Indian Wells.
Evert, speaking in an ESPN conference call to promote the network’s coverage of the event, says that she’s been surprised that Keys hasn’t been able to do more of late.
"I just think that the more she loses, I think she's just losing a little bit more confidence as each match goes on," she said. "We are not seeing the Madison Keys that we saw a little bit last year and the year before when she was we were building her up to be the next American player to win a Grand Slam.”
