Not only is Nick Kyrgios taking part in the Wimbledon men’s singles draw, which will mark the Aussie’s return to competitive tennis for the first time since the Australian Open in February, he’s also playing mixed doubles at this year’s Championships.
And Kyrgios has chosen a megastar of a partner—the one and only Venus Williams.
Kyrgios broke the news to reporters during Saturday’s media day at Wimbledon, in a small interview room with no transcription available.
"The mixed doubles team of the tournament," he told reporters.
Williams, a five-time singles champion at SW19, will make her 23rd appearance in the Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles draw, facing Mihaela Buzarnescu in first-round action. She owns a remarkable 89-17 lifetime singles record at Wimbledon.
She’s also a six-time Ladies’ Doubles champion at Wimbledon, and she reached the finals of the mixed competition in 2006 with Bob Bryan as her partner.
It seems that Williams first floated the idea of playing with Kyrgios four years ago, and the Aussie took notice.
