The top-seeded duo of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic have tested positive for Covid-19 and have been removed from the draw. The Croatian duo has been unstoppable on the doubles court this season, winning six titles including Masters 1000 trophies at Miami, Monte-Carlo and Rome.
The tournament sent out an official announcement on Wednesday evening, but did not name the players specifically.
“The Roland-Garros tournament organizers confirm that two players from the men’s doubles draw, on the same team, have tested positive for Covid-19,” the statement read.
“In line with the tournament’s public health and safety protocol, the pair have been removed from the draw, which commenced yesterday, and the two players placed in quarantine. They will be replaced by the first team on the alternate list. Since the beginning of the tournament on 24 May, 2,446 tests have been performed on players and their teams. This is the first occurence in which the tournament organizers must remove players, in accordance with their health protocol.”
A quick glance at the men’s doubles draw shows that pair has been removed.
Alternates Pablo Cuevas and Guido Pella will face Pablo Andujar and Pedro Martinez on the top line of the draw instead.
