Second Serve

A heated interaction with chair umpire Carlos Ramos appeared to help Novak Djokovic dial in his focus during the fourth set of his five-set victory over Diego Schwartzman on Friday in third-round action at Roland Garros.

The defending champion was first given a time violation for taking too long to serve between points. After the point, which was won by Schwartzman, Djokovic shouts angrily in Serbian and appears to raise his racquet in the direction of Ramos, which prompts a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct from the chair.

Djokovic abruptly marches to the chair and asks: “What did I say? Why did you give me a warning? Do you understand Serbian?”

Ramos tells Djokovic that he issued the warning because of Djokovic’s “attitude,” to which Djokovic replies “What attitude man?”

Finally the conversation ends with Ramos asking “What did you do with your racquet?”

At this point the crowd is hollering and Djokovic has his anger out of his system.

Mission accomplished.

The No.2 seed would win eight of the final ten games to notch a 5-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory. He’ll face either Lucas Pouille or Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

Afterwards things were much calmer. Djokovic gave props to his vanquished opponent and celebrated with the young ones. Kid tested—and approved.
