World No.1’s and defending champions Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams headline this year’s Wimbledon singles seeds. The All-England Club announced both gentlemen’s and ladies seeds this morning.
Grass Clippings: Takeaways From Grass Court Lead-up Events
Djokovic leads the men’s seeds followed by No. 2 Andy Murray and No. 3 seed Roger Federer. With Rafael Nadal out of the event due to a wrist injury, Stan Wawrinka is now the No. 4 seed.
With Wimbledon allowed to use a seedings formula used to reflect past grass court results, several men were boosted higher in the seedings.
That included last year’s semifinalist Richard Gasquet who finds himself as the No. 7 seed and Marin Cilic as the No. 9 seed, though currently he is ranked by the ATP at No. 13. Lucas Pouille of France is the last man in seeded at No. 32.
On the women’s side, the seeds reflect current WTA rankings.
After Williams, the seeds lists includes No. 2 seed Garbine Muguruza fresh off winning the French Open, No. 3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, and No. 4 seed and Australian Open winner Angelique Kerber.
Five-time Wimbedon winner Venus Williams is seeded No. 9, Madison Keys at No. 10, and two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova at No. 11.
With current WTA ranked No. 15 Flavia Pennetta not competing, those players ranked below her were moved up one spot starting with No. 15 seed Sam Stosur. Kristina Mladenovic of France just made the list seeded at No. 32.
Main draw play at Wimbledon begins on June 27. The full seedings list is here.
