They say that playing doubles can be a great source of practice time for singles. If that’s true then Lucie Safarova will be readier than ever for the challenge of facing Serena Williams in the French Open women’s singles final.
Women's Final Preview: Can Serena Overcome Illness and Notch Major Title No. 20?
The blossoming 28-year-old advanced to her second consecutive Grand Slam doubles final alongside American Bethanie Mattek-Sands on Friday with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 victory over 9th-seeded Lucie Hradecka and Andrea Hlavackova.
In the other semifinal, 12th-seeded Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova scored the upset over Russia’s 2nd-seeded tandem of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, 6-3, 6-2.
Safarova is bidding to become the first player to sweep the singles and doubles titles at a Grand Slam since Serena Williams at Wimbledon in 2012 (she won the doubles title with Venus Williams) and the first player to sweep the singles and doubles titles at the French Open since Mary Pierce in 2000 (she won the doubles title with Martina Hingis).
However the task will be difficult on both fronts for Safarova. In singles for the obvious reason that she’ll face 19-time major champion Serena Williams, whom she’s 0-8 lifetime against. But doubles will be challenging as well: Dellacqua and Shvedova won the only previous meeting between the two teams, edging Mattek-Sands and Safarova in a match tie-break in the semifinals of Madrid last month, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.
