Following his 6-4, 6-4 upset win against 2012 champion Marin Cilic at the Queen’s Club Aegon Championships, Marinko Matosevic admitted he could never follow Andy Murray's lead and be coached by a woman, saying he doesn't "think that highly of the women’s game."
Matosevic is the latest in a line of current and former players to express his opinion on Murray's hiring of Amelie Mauresmo, which became official over the weekend.
“Apparently there’s a few guys in the top 100 who are coached by women. (Mikhail) Kukushkin is coached by his wife, Denis Istomin by his mum, she’s done a great job with him,” Matosevic said.
He added: “For me, I couldn’t do it, since I don’t think that highly of the women’s game...It’s all equal rights these days, you’ve got to be politically correct, so someone’s got to give it a go – it won’t be me.”
The 28-year-old Australian recently made the second round at Roland Garros, winning a match at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career in his 13th main draw appearance.
Murray's decision to hire the two-time Grand Slam champion for the grass court season has been met with mixed opinion. When BBC Sport asked stars from the game for their reactions to the announcement, Ana Ivanovic called it "exciting" and thinks it will "push tennis in a different direction." Former world No. 1 Jim Courier called it "a bold call, certainly an interesting one," while Pat Cash thinks "it will raise a few eyebrows."
