Football and Tennis: Baghdatis' Inspiring Circle of Life
Football played a massive role in kick-starting the career of
Marcos Baghdatis
, so it was only fitting that his professional tennis journey ended on the 15th anniversary of the
most magical moment in Greek football history
.
Baghdatis spoke eloquently several times during his last Wimbledon about the Greek team that won the European Championships in 2004, and on Thursday at Wimbledon, after the final match of his career, Baghdatis broke down in tears as he explained his own personal circle in relation to this epic moment in Greek sporting history.
‘You know, what's funny? The 4th of July, 2004, Greece won the European Championship in soccer, and that's the impact, the impact that gave -- that tournament gave me the impact that I can believe in myself and I can achieve anything,” he told a small gathering of reporters on Thursday at Wimbledon. “Anything is possible.”
It’s a story that many fans—of tennis, of football, or otherwise—can relate to. Sports is the only true reality show and it teaches us that dreams do come true. For this reason, Baghdatis’ personal triumphs in his own career and Greek’s triumph will forever be related.
“I'm retiring on the 4th of July, 2019,” he continued. “And I think that says everything. And I leave a legacy behind, the same legacy I got from the team of 2004 in Portugal, I leave this legacy behind to some kids in Cyprus or Greece.”
The former World No.8, Grand Slam finalist and first man from Cyprus to ever crack the Top 100 let alone the Top 10, broke down in tears as he contemplated the origins of his success and their lasting implications.
“So, yeah, that's life,” he concluded. “I think that's unbelievable that I can finish my career today. It's an unbelievable coincidence.”
