Angelique Kerber's sweep of Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final resonated with American viewers.

Kerber's conquest of Serena denied the 36-year-old Williams' bid to equal Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam titles.

ESPN reports its audience for the Wimbledon ladies final averaged 2.697 million households in Nielsen Fast National ratings garnering a 1.8 rating. The audience for the ladies' final rose 32 percent compared to the 2017 final when Garbine Muguruza defeated Venus Williams draing 2.039 million viewers for ESPN's telecast and a 1.4 rating.

The telecast resonated with young adults, up 26 percent among people ages 18 to 49 and up 36 percent among viewers ages 25 to 54 over the 2017 final.

It was ESPN’s largest audience for The Championships ladies' final since 2012 when Serena Williams' victory over Agnieszka Radwanska generated a 2.831 million audience.

"I'm so thankful what's happened the last two weeks and also this is my third Grand Slam," Kerber said. "And it's the third different one, so this is really special one. I just try to enjoy every single moment here."






Kerber is the first German woman to win Wimbledon since Steffi Graf in 1996. The Hall of Famer texted congratulations to Kerber, who grew up looking up to Graf and has hit with her in Las Vegas. 

"She wrote me a message that she's happy for me and that I had to really enjoy every moment now and that I deserved it," Kerber said.
