Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

Nick Kyrgios clanked 18 double faults in his 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-3 upset loss to 17-year-old Canadian wild card Denis Shapovalov in Toronto last night.

While Kyrgios praised the Wimbledon junior champion as a "top player", he also took a parting shot at Australian sports fans.

Asked what advice he would give the 370th-ranked teenager, Kyrgios said he believes Shapovalov has a bright future in part because "Canadians probably support their athletes a little better than Australians do."

"I think the Canadians probably support their athletes a little better than the Australians do. I think he's going to do great," Kyrgios said. "He has a great support team. Obviously he can play in big moments. He won Wimbledon, obviously. That's not easy. It's going to be good. He plays 300 still. He has a long way to go obviously to get to the top 100 but I have no doubt he will get there quickly. He has to keep playing his game and keep working hard."

Asked to expand on his comparison of Canadian and Australian sports fans, Kyrgios replied: "I think it speaks for itself."

The former Wimbledon quarterfinalist lost the match, but continues to win feeding his Pokemon Go addiction.

Kyrgios is scheduled to partner Jack Sock in a Rogers Cup opening-round doubles match against Gilles Muller and Benoit Paire later today.

Kyrgios, who was missing big second serves by large margins and slapping his forehand around, said he couldn't explain his serving issues.

"Jeez, I didn't know I had that many double faults. That's pretty bad," Kyrgios said. "Yeah, it was just bad serving day, I guess. I need to practice a little more."
