Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

15-year-old Anastasia Potapova won Wimbledon on Saturday. But she didn’t win it quite when she thought she had. Watch as the Russian celebrates prematurely, falling to her back at the baseline before realizing that her serve had been ruled out on a challenge. Moments later it happened again, as another winning serve was ruled just long. But Potapova proved third time lucky when Dayana Yastremska netted a forehand to bring a close to a thrilling final, 6-4, 6-3.

‘Well, at first time I was start, like, ‘Oh, my God, I won it.’” Potapova said. “When she says, Can I have a challenge please? I'm just like, Please, cannot be. Please.”

She added: “But after, on the third match point, I was focus on my game, focus on my serve, focus on everything to win it finally. I'm happy and proud that I did it.”

The Russian joins Victoria Azarenka and Jelena Jankovic in the legion of former Wimbledon Junior Girls’ Singles champions.
