A chance encounter in Paris is leaving Andrea Petkovic hopeful for future success on the tennis court.
WTA: Venus Returns to Istanbul
That's what the 27-year-old WTA tennis star revealed to German media about her new coaching connection with Boris Becker.
Petkovic, who spoke to German media outlet Spiegel, originally reached out to another German tennis legend earlier in the year - Steffi Graf. Petkovic contacted Graf via email in hopes she might take on a coaching role. But the 22-time Grand Slam singles winner declined due to family commitments.
Things changed though in Paris at the French Open when Petkovic met Becker during a lunchtime break. Petkovic had just lost in the third round of the Grand Slam event.
"I was sitting alone in the restaurant at lunch and Boris happened to walk past. We ended up talking for a long time" Petkovic told Spiegel. “He has become my counselor.”
Petkovic is hopeful that under Becker's guidance she will enjoy an upswing in her season and career. Currently ranked No. 16 in the world, Petkovic is aiming for a return to the top 10 as she begins plans for the North American hard court swing leading up to the US Open.
"There is no one better to learn from than Boris. He is a born Grand Slam champion and has already given me many important tips, especially on a mental level," Petkovic added.
Becker recently helped ATP No. 1 Novak Djokovic claim his third Wimbledon title.
