Novak Djokovic has no choice but to "rethink his principles" on vaccination to play Grand Slam events again, Toni Nadal says.
The world No. 1, who is unvaccinated, was deported from Australia last Sunday after the nation canceled his visa for the second time. A new French law will require all athletes to be vaccinated meaning Djokovic will not be able to defend his Roland Garros title if he declines to take the jab.

Toni Nadal, the uncle and original coach of Rafael Nadal, says under this current pandemic climate Djokovic has no choice but to change his position on the Coronavirus vaccine. In an interview with Onda Cero's Paco Munoz, the elder Nadal said if other pros had adopted Djokovic's stance in Melbourne "there would still be no tournament."
"It's a situation that has surprised me that this point has been reached. Djokovic has had the chance to do things differently," Toni Nadal said. "It was clear that to play he had to get vaccinated. It starts from the fact that the organizers and the government want to have Djokovic. I don't think there is an interest in going against someone because for the tournament and the public it was better for them to be there, if everyone had taken Djokovic's line there would still be no tournament.
"Everyone can have their convictions but there is a moment that has to be reconsidered I think he will have to do something if he can not play Roland Garros. I think he will have no choice but to rethink his principles because the reality is that if they tell you that you can't defend the Roland Garros title, I don't know. Hopefully the pandemic will pass quickly and everything can return to normal."
Toni Nadal said he's been watching his nephew's Melbourne matches and believes he will grow stronger as he plays more matches.
"He lacks a series of games to have chances of victory but as time goes by he will end up playing better," Toni Nadal said. "With the passage of time you look at everything with more tranquility but you have the same will as winning the matches. The reality is that you have to win from beating the record but life will not change him."
