A case of Coronavirus forced Nick Kyrgios out of Sydney today and threatens his status for next week's Australian Open.

The 26-year-old Kyrgios withdrew from the Sydney Tennis Classic ahead of his scheduled match vs. Fabio Fognini on Monday.

Later, Kyrgios posted on social media he had tested positive for the virus. Kyrgios will isolate in Sydney for seven days then hopes to play the Australian Open, which starts in Melbourne on Monday.

"The reason I've had to retire from Sydney is that I've tested positive for Covid-19. I feel good at the moment, without symptoms," Kyrgios said on social media. "If all goes well I will see you all at the Australian Open."

Last week, Kyrgios withdrew from the Melbourne Summer Set 1 due to illness.



The world No. 114 has not played a Tour-level match since bowing to Roberto Bautista Agut in his US Open opener last August. Kyrgios played Laver Cup in September losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas.

The former world No. 13 reached the Australian Open third round last February falling to Dominic Thiem. Kyrgios' best AO result is a quarterfinal appearance in 2015.
