Joao Sousa's Australian Open experience is over before it began.
Sousa announced on social media he will miss next month's Australian Open due to the nation's travel restrictions amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
Kyrgios: Djokovic Will Never Be GOAT
The 92nd-ranked Sousa tested positive for COVID-19 prior to his planned departure on board one of the tournament's charter flights. Though Sousa said he's since tested negative, Australian governmental safety protocols will prevent him from playing the AO.
I want to let you know that unfortunately I tested positive for Covid-19 just before my departure to Australia so I will not be able to play in the coming weeks. Even though I already tested negative and have no symptoms, due to the strict rules of the Australian Government, I won’t be able to travel."
The Australian Open is set to start on February 8th.
Sousa's best results in eight career Melbourne appearance are three trips to the third round in 2015, 2016 and 2019. Sousa lost to Federico Delbonis in the 2020 opening round.
"After such a great offseason and hard work, I’m very disappointed to not be able to play in such a great event where Tennis Australia and the Tour put so much effort to make it happen," Sousa said. "Thank you all for your support."
