Second Serve

Fitness fanatic Caroline Wozniacki has completed the New York City Marathon, spent countless hours in the ring committed to boxing training and routinely throws the football around to warm up her arm for serving.

These days the multi-sport athlete is spending more time between the lines.

In a physical test, Wozniacki scored a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory over Olympic gold-medal champion Monica Puig in her Sydney opener.

The 26-year-old Dane said she's made a major move shifting training from the gym to the court.

"I changed up my practice quite a bit, I did a lot of other things, probably spent more time on court than I have in a long time and less time in the gym, actually,” Wozniacki told the media in Sydney. “That was a big change for me, because I have worked so hard on my fitness and worked so hard on trying to prevent injuries, but at the end of the day, I think I sometimes need to ease off a little bit."

Subscribing to the theory less is more, Wozniacki, who lost to Julia Goerges in the Auckland quarterfinals, said she feels strong ahead of the Australian Open

“I guess I’m not a spring chicken anymore," Wozniacki said. "Sometimes less is more. But I have really focused on some main parts of my game and just really worked hard and tried to prepare as best as I can.

“For the first time in a long time, the whole off-season, I didn’t have any problems. Right now, knock on wood, I’m feeling good.”
