World No.15 Lucas Pouille was forced to pull the plug at the Brisbane International on Wednesday. The Frenchman injured a toe on his right foot and retired a few games later, trailing Kyle Edmund, 6-3, 3-1.

Edmund, ranked No.45, moves on to face either Stan Wawrinka or Viktor Troicki in the quarterfinals.

Third-seeded Kei Nishikori was also a winner on Wednesday in Brisbane. Japan’s No.1 came back from a set down to top American qualifier Jared Donaldson, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Our Take:

Tough break for Pouille, who is such a promising player and put in a lot of hard yards during the off-season, working with Roger Federer. Pouille looked excellent on Tuesday when he notched a win over the always difficult to defeat Gilles Simon.

It will be very disappointing if Pouille ends up missing the Australian Open for this.

But how about Kyle Edmund? The young Brit is quite the physical specimen and he boasts won of the most high-octane forehands in the game. It will be interesting to see how high he can climb in 2016—he could be headed for the Top-20 just like Pouille did last season.
