Second Serve

So, you’re about to defeat the world’s greatest tennis player, something you’ve never done before, and you’re talking with your coach as the match approaches its conclusion.

What do you do? Break down tactics, get inspirational, meditate?

Madison Brengle eschewed all the above strategies in order to humorously belittle herself on Wednesday, as her coach Nicole Melichar laughed along (SEE VIDEO ABOVE).

Brengle, who is known to go off-topic with her coach during timeouts, once said she’d rather chew on a pine cone than play against Caroline Wozniacki. Her coaches’ reply? “Do you want me to go get you one?”

On Wednesday during her 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-4 victory over Williams, Brengle said “I think she’s surprised how bad I am,” as Melichar giggled alongside her. Even the women in the front row were having a good laugh as the two bantered on.

But Brengle had the last laugh in Auckland, sending Serena Williams out of the draw and earning her second Top-5 win.
