Russian veteran Svetlana Kuznetsova kicked off 2017 by achieving another milestone in her long career; this time at the Brisbane International.

Hopman Cup: Federer Enjoys Comeback Win in Perth

The fifth seeded Kuznetsova faced off against rising American Louisa Chirico in the opening round of the combined ATP and WTA event. Kuznetsova got off to a strong start by easily taking the opening set.

The Russian soon served for the match while up 5-4 in the second set. Though she faced three break points, Kuznetsova finally closed out the 6-2, 6-4 win.

With that, Kuznetsova earned her 600th career victory. Later, Kuznetsova celebrated the win on Twitter.


In other WTA action, Spain’s Garbine Mugurzua held off a comeback by Australia’s own Sam Stosur in their opening round encounter.

The French Open champion took the first set 7-5. Stosur claimed the second set in a tiebreak that took things into a deciding ser during the nearly three hour contest.

Muguruza finally sealed the 7-5, 6-7(2), 7-5 win.

No. 8 seed Roberta Vinci saved five match points before winning her opening round against Kateryna Bondarenko in three tiebreaks. 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 7-6(5).
