Eugenie Bouchard picked up her first win of the season and ended a personal four-match losing streak by defeating China’s Zhang Shuai, 7-6(1), 6-2.

According to NZ.Sports.Yahoo, Bouchard is motivated to win—and also motivated to prove the haters wrong.

"I first and foremost play tennis for myself and want to achieve success and results for myself," said Bouchard, according to Yahoo. "But sometimes after getting a lot of hate, which of course I do, it is a little bit motivating for sure to try and prove people wrong and try to prove to myself and everyone that I can do it. I can be successful. I'm on that path. It's a long way to go, but I hope I can do that."

Bouchard will face either Dominika Cibulkova or Laura Siegemund in the second round of the Apia International.

Others to advance to the second round were Russia’s Daria Kasatkina and Svetlana Kuznetsova, along with Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva, who moved through when Belinda Bencic retired with a toe injury.
