Second Serve

Dominic Thiem dropped a hard-fought four-setter to David Goffin at Hisense Arena on Friday, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-5. Theim won’t be moving on in Melbourne, but he won a lot of respect when he conceded this point to Goffin in the second set. The umpire had already ruled in Thiem’s favor but the Austrian said that he made contact with the ball before he heard the line judge’s call and therefore the call should go to Goffin.

This move came during an important game, and Thiem ended up getting broken by Goffin, which made the Austrian’s gesture even more impressive.

Goffin gets his first top-20 win at a major in nine tries, and will advance to face either Roger Federer or Grigor Dimitrov in the round of 16.

Goffin reaches the round of 16 for the first time in Melbourne, and becomes just the fourth man from Belgium to get that far.

Thiem exits before reaching the second week, but he showed what kind of a player he is this week in more ways than one.
