Mouratoglou on Nadal: He’s Much Slower and He Knows it

Patrick Mouratoglou, coach of Serena Williams and owner of the Patrick Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in Nice, has his own unique take on the fortunes of Rafael Nadal. In an article written by French journalist Carole Bouchard for SI, the Frenchman gave his educated opinion on what ails the 14-time major winner. He pulled no punches.

Here’s a snippet of what Mouratoglou told Bouchard:

“[A few years ago] when he wasn’t playing his best tennis, he would keep the ball in play aiming to the middle of the court and run. He’d put so much intensity and be impossible to hit through. Today he can’t do that anymore because his footwork is so far from what it was before. He’s much slower. And he knows it.”

It’s an interesting read, and Mouratoglou has a lot more to say on the subject of Nadal. Plus the article features a quote from Toni Nadal that hints that he might be open to working with or giving way to another coach in the future. Read the full article here.
