Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza refuse to lose, and even mother nature is getting behind them. After the world No. 1’s fell behind by a set and a break to Yaroslava Shvedova and Raluca Olaru on Thursday in Sydney, a rain delay helped them push the reset button. When they returned from the locker room, they set about the business of earning a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory to lock up their 29th consecutive victory.
With the triumph Hingis and Mirza passed Gigi Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva’s record of 28 wins in a row, which was set in 1994.
Now team #Santina has the longest WTA doubles win streak since 1990, when Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova won 44 matches in succession.
Hingis and Mirza will need a few years if they plan on breaking the WTA’s all-time record. Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver once won 109 matches in a row. Their streak, which ended at Wimbledon in 1985, included 22 titles, 8 Grand Slam titles and saw them drop only 14 sets.
Hingis and Mirza will face either Garcia/Mladenovic or Chan/Chan in the final.
