David Ferrer came to the aid of his compatriot Rafael Nadal during an interview with Spanish Radio, telling the world that it’s not time to “bury” Nadal yet, especially given that he’s No. 5 in the world and coming off a productive off-season.

Our Twitter friend @genny_ss was kind enough to translate some of the talking points of the interview here:

Nadal, who dropped his first-round match with Fernando Verdasco in Australia, will turn 30 at the French Open this year. Though many are saying that Nadal’s days of domination at Roland Garros are now over, Ferrer says the nine-time champion remains on his short list of French Open favorites. “Of course,” Ferrer says. “How could you not?”

Nadal himself was disappointed about falling so early in Melbourne, but he still seems convinced that his form is improving and his hard work will reap benefits later in the season.

“The match is a tough loss for me obviously,” he said. “Obviously it is tough, especially because it is not like last year that I arrived here playing bad and feeling myself not ready for it. This year was a completely different story. I have been playing and practicing great and working so much.

“It is tough, but at the same time, I know I did everything that I can to be ready for it. Was not my day. Let's keep going. That's the only thing.”
