Second Serve

Stan Wawrinka eased into the round of 16 and became the 12th active ATP player to earn his 400th match win with a 6-2, 6-3, 7-6(3) win over Lukas Rosol on Saturday in Melbourne.

But his impressive tennis may have been outshined by his impressive sense of humor when it was all said and done.

After the match, while being interviewed by Jim Courier on court, the Swiss gave a funny interview in which he talked about his new Yonex clothing, and poked fun at his own tendency to talk too much.

“For sure this one is quite flashy,” said Wawrinka, when asked to explain his new duds. “At least everybody can see me in the stadium.”

Courier then asked Wawrinka about his scratchy voice, wondering if he’d been sick. “I’ve been okay,” Wawrinka said. “Maybe too many cigars.”

He added: “I don’t really need my voice. If I can talk I talk too much shit.”

The 2014 Australian Open champion has now reached the round of 16 in Melbourne for four consecutive years.

“I'm happy the way I'm playing so far,” Wawrinka said after the match. “Today I think the beginning I start really well, not only the serve, but returning almost every shot, making him play a lot, being aggressive, taking the ball early. Happy with the match in general. Three sets, it's a good win again.”

Wawrinka will face Canada’s Milos Raonic in the round of 16 on Monday. Raonic won his seventh consecutive match on Saturday, taking down Viktor Troicki, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

“He's been playing really good since the beginning of the year, winning the first title in Brisbane against Roger in the final,” Wawrinka said of the Canadian. “He's trying to improve. He's trying to go there. He's trying to win big title. It will be a difficult match, for sure. He's serving big. I play him in Abu Dhabi exhibition. I lost first match of the year. He change few things in his game.”

In other third-round action on Saturday, David Ferrer pummeled American Steve Johnson in straight sets to reach the round of 16 in Melbourne for the sixth consecutive time. The Spaniard will next square off with John Isner, who defeated Feliciano Lopez in four sets.

Gael Monfils was also a three-set winner against Stephane Robert.
