American Shelby Rogers, ranked 47 and still without a WTA title at the age of 29, has reportedly hired Piotr Sierzputowski, the former coach of Iga Swiatek for five years, on a trial run.
The pair spent some time together at Boca Raton recently, and will head to Doha on a trial, with an eye on a possible longer-term agreement if things go well.
Rogers, a former World No.36, has notched two Grand Slam quarterfinals in her career, and owns wins over World No.1 Ashleigh Barty (last year at US Open) as well as Simona Halep, Maria Sakkari and Serena Williams. She’s a powerful, dynamic player that excels on all surfaces.
“I feel this could be a great project for Shelby and me,” the 2020 WTA Coach of the Year told Łukasz Jachimiak of Sport.Pl. “But for now we are working quietly and getting to know each other. We are both curious how the beginning of our cooperation will turn out.” Rogers needed time to recover from knee surgery, which she underwent in 2018, but has since recovered from well outside the Top-200 to become a factor on tour again.
“She wants to win big tournaments and in my opinion it is possible,” Sierzputowsky said.
