Carlos Alcaraz has been making history on many levels over the last year. Last September, when the Spaniard became the youngest US Open men’s singles quarterfinalist in Open Era history, was just the beginning. On Sunday we saw Alcaraz hit a few more milestones at Rio.
First he became the youngest ATP 500 champion in history, a category that was started in 2009.
More impressively, Alcaraz’s title in Rio catapults him inside the Top-20 and makes him the youngest active player to ever hold a Top-20 ranking. Not even Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer can top what Alcaraz has done by reaching the Top-20 at the age of 18 years, nine months and 16 day.
According to the ATP, Nadal is the only other active ATP player to have reached the Top-20 before turning 19 – the Spaniard was 18 years, ten months and one day old.
Alcaraz vs. the Big 3 – Who hit the Top-20 Younger?
Alcaraz: 2/21/2022 - reaches Top-20 at 18 years, nine months and 16 days
Nadal: 4/4/2005 - reaches Top-20 at 18 years, ten months and one day
Djokovic: 10/9/2006 - reaches the Top-20 at 19 years, four months and 17 days
Federer: 2/26/2001 - reaches the Top-20 at 19 years, six months and 18 days
Alcaraz is the youngest player to crack the Top-20 since Andrei Medvedev in 1993.
