Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

David Goffin, like so many others these days, is singing the praise of rising Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. After falling in straight sets to the 17-year-old at the Great Ocean Road Open in Melbourne on Wednesday, the current World No.14 opened up about the experience.

“The guy played unbelievable,” Goffin said.

The 30-year-old Belgian admitted that he might not have played at his peak, but nevertheless, he says that Alcaraz deserves all the praise.

“He's such a young player, but super talented already,” Goffin said. “He hit the ball really hard, and today was a tough match. He played really well. He was really aggressive. Of course it was not my best match ever. And, well, he played unbelievable in the way he was playing. He was aggressive, the way he was returning.”

Goffin was asked how he rated Alcaraz, currently ranked 146 and fresh off an Australian Open qualifying run last month, for the future.

“He just killed me, so I would say he's good,” Goffin said with a smile.

He added: “I don't know exactly how he's playing, you know. He had nothing to lose today. He qualified for his first Grand Slam. He's under 18. He's hitting the ball unbelievable. So I don't know if he's playing like tonight every day, every match, but it was a huge performance tonight.”

Goffin says that Alcaraz played very aggressively and struck world-class returns.

“He didn't let me play,” the Belgian said. “He was super-aggressive. I was like 20% of second serve. Yeah, I won 20% on my second serve, so he was returning like bombs, half volley all the time. Was impressive tonight, but we will see in the future if he's, like, a normal match or an unbelievable match or a bad match. You never know. But what he did tonight was a good one."

Alcaraz will continue his run in Melbourne on Friday when he meets Brazil's Thiago Monteiro in the round of 16.
