Bianca Andreescu didn’t come away with the result she wanted on Day 3 of the Australian Open against Hsieh Su-Wei, but the Canadian is relieved to be back in the mix on the WTA Tour and, most important, she is eager to play more events on tour.

“I feel really good,” Andreescu told reporters after falling to Hsieh 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesdsay. “After my first round, I thought I would feel more exhausted, but I felt amazing.”

The Canadian has erased a lot of doubt about her current health status with her performance in Melbourne, and she reassured reporters that she is feeling ready to continue on with a more complete schedule in 2021.

“I want to be careful, a hundred percent,” she said. “I don't want to overdo it, even though I want to play literally every tournament there is at the moment. Like, that's just how I feel. But I have to take a step back and just reflect on everything that I've experienced in the past and make sure I make the right decisions with that experience. If I'm healthy, I'll be playing a lot, so I'll be here.”

Andreescu was one of the 72 players that was forced to do hard quarantine in Melbourne, and that didn’t make this year’s Australian Open easy for her. But even so, she’s pleased to find that she still has her trademark fighting spirit, which was on display in Day 1 when she rallied from 0-40 down at 3-3 in the third set against Mihaela Buzarnescu, and swept through the final three games.

“It’s good to know that I still have that fighting spirit in me,” she said. “I'm able to give it my all on the court. I think you see that more in the first match than this match, but also being healthy.”

And now that her first event in 16 months is in the books, Andreescu can start to work on getting her game into peak performance form.

“I don't feel at my best on the court for sure, but I'm super happy that I'm finally back after being off for so long,” she surmised. “It's just such an amazing feeling being back, doing what I love. This is a bit of a challenge, but I love me a challenge, so I'm going to do my best to get back out there and, like I said, take this as a blessing in a way and just bounce back.”
