Kvitova: Osaka Will be Fine

Petra Kvitova fell to Naomi Osaka in a gripping three-set Australian Open final last month.

Kvitova is confident the two-time Grand Slam champion will "be fine" as she adjusts to life as world No. 1.

Osaka, who split with coach Sascha Bajin after winning her second straight Grand Slam title in Melbourne, lost her first match as world No. 1 to Kristina Mladenovic in Dubai yesterday.

Two-time Wimbledon winner Kvitova says it will take Osaka some time to adjust to the added media scrutiny, but believes she will learn and grow from the experience and "be fine" in the long run.

"It’s not really easy to handle the pressure and attention and the media," Kvitova told the media in Dubai after her three-set win over American Jennifer Brady. "She just needs the time. I don’t think there’s any advice.

"I think that she just needs to live it and find the experiences from it and she will be fine. I think it took me like a year probably (to adjust). Then three years to win another Grand Slam and I was still in the top 10. I was still fighting."

In the aftermath of her 6-3, 6-3 loss to Mladenovic, Osaka briefly grew teary-eyed confessing she's not yet fully comfortable with the attention that comes with world No. 1.

"I don't think I necessarily understand what position I'm in, in a way, because last year I wasn't even anywhere close to this ranking," Osaksa said. "People didn't pay attention to me. That's something that I'm comfortable with.

"I don't know why I'm crying. Yeah. I don't know why this is happening."

The 28-year-old Kvitova said Osaka will adapt to the bulls-eye on her back and the fact every opponent will be even more motivated to defeat her now.

"Every player on the other side wants to beat you,” Kvitova said. "She’s number one, a Grand Slam winner and everyone just wants to beat her.

"That’s how the players are thinking—I do remember when I was young, I had the same mindset.”
