The pair have shared the doubles court previously. Last October, Nadal and compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta beat Tomic and Jack Sock, 6-7 (6), 6-2, 10-8, to capture the Beijing championship.
Sock is scheduled to partner Davis Cup teammate John Isner in Indian Wells.
Nadal has played dynamic doubles in the desert. Nadal, who partnered Marc Lopez to win the Olympic doubles gold medal in Rio last summer, also paired with Lopez to collect the 2010 and 2012 Indian Wells doubles titles.
Marc Lopez, whom Nadal has called his dream doubles partner, is playing with Feliciano Lopez in Indian Wells, reprising their 2016 Roland Garros championship partnership.
Australian Open finalist Nadal is a three-time Indian Wells singles champion, winning titles in 2007, 2009 and 2013.
