Murray Will Play Davis Cup Quarterfinals

Andy Murray is looking forward to Great Britain's Davis Cup quarterfinal vs. France in April, while looking back on what went wrong in Melbourne.

Murray's first Australian Open as world No. 1 ended with a fourth-round upset loss to Mischa Zverev.

In retrospect, Murray suggests opening his season in Doha, where he fell to second-ranked Novak Djokovic in the final, was not the been the best preparation for Melbourne.

“There are definitely things I would have done a bit differently,” Murray told the Daily Mail. “It’s difficult sometimes with the way the schedule is to get things right all the time. I was in a position I’d never experienced before, played that much tennis and been that fatigued at the end of the year, it was difficult to know exactly what to do.

‘Whether Doha’s the best preparation or not, I don’t know. Novak (Djokovic) played it the year before and went on to win the Australian Open and has played it a number of years and it’s not affected him in Melbourne.”

Murray said he was impressed by Roger Federer's run to his 18th Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

"It's incredible what he did in Australia after such a long break," Murray said. "We play so much, a lot of the year. Sometimes coming to events fresh can have some huge advantages. Him and Rafa were both coming back from a pretty significant period of time out and they both played extremely well. Maybe that's something we can all learn from moving forwards."

The Wimbledon champion met with the media at the London offices of UNICEF. Murray and Federer will play a charity exhibition match in Glasgow on November 7th to benefit UNICEF.

The man who led Great Britain to the 2015 Davis Cup championship will be ready for Team GB’s Davis Cup quarterfinal against host France set for April 7-9th.

“I think I will definitely be in a better position to compete in that one,” said Murray, who did not make the trip to Ottawa for Britain’s 3-2 victory over Canada last weekend. “I certainly needed to take a break after the Aussie Open. I felt that, especially when I got home.”

The Roland Garros runner-up told SkySports News he expects France to host the Davis Cup quarterfinals on red clay.

"It'll be tough. I assume they'll probably put it on clay," Murray said. "I don't know where they'll play it, but Monte Carlo would be good."
