Second Serve

Darian King became the first player from Barbados to record an ATP win on Tuesday in Memphis when he upset No. 5-seeded Bernard Tomic, 6-4, 6-4.

King, a 24-year-old that is currently ranked No.140 in the world, was playing in his second main draw at the ATP-level, and his first since 2015.

The qualifier dropped only 12 points on serve and did not face a break point against Tomic.

“That was a great experience to qualify there but to get a win against a former Top 17 player is a thrill,” King told ATPWorldTour.com. “I’m stoked and hopefully I can continue. I’m glad for this win for Barbados. I trained hard for this moment.”

In other action on Tuesday in Memphis, last year’s runner-up Taylor Fritz defeated No.8-seeded Yen-Hsun Lu, saving a match point to prevail, 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(7).

Ryan Harrison, Tim Smyczek, Matthew Ebden and No.7-seeded Steve Darcis were also winners.
