Roger Federer has his sights set on competing at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The Swiss says he’s hoping that that the show goes on, and even admitted that for him, it may have been a blessing that the Games were cancelled in 2020, because he would have had to miss them due to injury.

“This is clearly one of my big goals,” Federer, who underwent two knee surgeries in 2020 and has not played since the Australian Open, said.

“Obviously the big plan is to be there for the Olympics,” Federer said. “This is for me the big one. Maybe selfishly for me it wasn’t a bad thing that it was moved (from 2020), because of the problems I had this year. Let’s hope now for the best for the Olympic Games coming to Tokyo this next year. Clearly this is one of my big goals; I really hope I can come back to Tokyo and Japan for that."

The Swiss would love to add an Olympic Gold medal in singles to his résumé in 2021. It’s one of the few things that he hasn’t won. In 2012 he lost the gold medal match to Andy Murray at the London Games, which were played at Wimbledon. In 2008 Federer and Stan Wawrinka took the doubles gold, defeating Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson in the final.
