There has been a lot of positive vibrations coming from Stan Wawrinka’s camp in 2022, but the former US Open champion has not been able to turn those good vibes into good wins.

He was forced to retire against Corentin Moutet on Day 1, falling to French lucky loser Corentin Moutet, 6-4, 7-6(7), and after the match he talked about the ups and downs he has been going through after facing many injury issues over the last several years.

“I'm getting closer to the end,” Wawrinka said on Monday. “That's for sure. I was injured for more than a year. It took me a while to feel much better physically and tennis-wise. I still love the game and want to compete a bit longer before stopping.”

Wawrinka, who has spent too much time in a hospital gown over the last two years, has undergone double surgery on his left knee in 2017, followed by a right knee surgery, then two surgeries on his left foot in March and June of 2021.

He still enjoys what I’m doing and is clinging to the belief that he has one big push left in him, despite the 3-9 record in 2022.

“For me as much as I enjoy and love what I'm doing, I want to keep going a little bit for sure,” he said, adding: “I Will need to have some results too, because you cannot just keep being on tour and losing.

“But I see that I'm playing and feeling better. Even if I'm not winning yet, I know I will be back winning matches soon. That's for sure. “I know that I'm closer to the end. That's for sure. It's a reality. I will never be able to play as well as I did in my career, because I'm getting older, but I believe that I still have some good and big results in me, and that's why I keep gonna fight a little bit.”
