At Wimbledon we learned that Ons Jabeur had a screen shot of the Venus Rosewater Dish, awarded to the women’s singles champion, as her screen saver on her phone.
Though she didn’t win the title, the Tunisian did become the first Arab woman to reach a Grand Slam final, coming one set from winning the most prestigious title in tennis.
This week in New York, it’s Bianca Andreescu’s turn to use the screen saver as a motivator.
After defeating Harmony Tan on Monday, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1, the Canadian revealed that she now has a photo of her holding the US Open trophy that she won in 2019 as her screen saver.
“I actually put my screen saver of me holding up that trophy so I can slowly embed that in my head again,” she said.
Andreescu, who is now 11-1 lifetime at the US Open, says the implications of earning a win over Serena Williams in the final seem even more remarkable to her three years after she took down the legend to complete her epic title run.
“I do think about it a lot, especially when I'm here,” she said. “Definitely playing Serena, win or lose, it's an honor. Not everyone can say that.
“It definitely gives me confidence. That year she was playing really well, so I think it definitely gave me confidence. I'm very, very happy that I got to play her. Maybe I can play her again. Who knows?”
Williams and Andreescu could potential meet in the semifinals, but for now the Canadian will be busy facing the talented Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil.
Haddad Maia is one of the hottest players in the game at the moment.
“I watched her play the final at the Rogers Cup,” Andreescu said. “She's playing really, really well. I'm sure Wednesday definitely won't be an easy match. … But I'm also playing really well, so I think it's going to be a great matchup.”
