Second Serve

On a day in which one towering server, 42-year-old Ivo Karlovic bid farewell, another massive server, John Isner said this isn't his final US Open.

In an all-American showdown on Louis Armstrong Stadium, Brandon Nakashima defused Isner 7-6(7), 7-6(6), 6-3 sending the former all-American at Georgia to his second straight US Open first-round exit.

The 36-year-old Isner, who defeated Nakashima in the Atlanta final a few weeks back, said if he's feeling good he plans to return for the 2022 US Open.

"We'll see, you know, how much longer I want to play," Isner said. "You know, I'm ranked like 20 in the world and I've only played nine or ten tournaments this year.

"So as I said, you know, as long as I feel good, just maybe hopefully give myself another shot at this tournament next year."

The 22nd-ranked Isner said despite opening losses at Wimbledon and the US Open, he's feeling good and confident he can still compete with the best.

"I mean, I still feel pretty good. I had a very good summer," Isner said. "I have had a good year. I just, you know, I didn't do well at Wimbledon, and I certainly didn't do well here. But apart from that, you know, I have been very solid and been tough to beat. But, you know, I don't like to go out early like this. It's disappointing."
