NEW YORK—Carla Suarez Navarro's early exit from the US Open will prove costly.
The Spaniard was hit with a $40,000 fine for violating the US Open's first-round performance rule. The US Open first-round prize money is $58,000, which will leave Suarez Navarro with $18,000 after the fine.

Suarez Navarro retired from her opening-round match vs. Timea Babos citing a back injury after dropping the first set, 6-2, in 47 minutes.
"After reviewing reports from Medical Staff and Grand Slam Supervisors, the determination was made that Carla Suarez Navarro did not perform to the required professional standards," tournament referee Soeren Friemel said in a statement.
The 28th-seeded Spaniard suffered her first Flushing Meadows opening-round exit since 2010.
