Daniil Medvedev has a reputation for playing like a wall—nothing gets by him and everything comes back. But the Russian says that he is also pushing to break through walls when it comes to facing the game’s greatest players.

After his first-round win over Prajnesh Gunneswaran on Monday in New York the Russian was asked about his massive win over Novak Djokovic in Cincinnati.

Medvedev said to achieve that victory he had to step out of his comfort zone, and it wasn’t by accident.

“I mean, playing against this big three opponents or anybody who is tough, you need to adapt your tactics,” he told reporters. “I felt really tired, which is completely normal, this match. I just felt that if I continue just kind of pushing the ball and staying solid, I'm going to destroy myself and he's going to destroy me.”

Medvedev says his decision to play big and hit giant second serves was the only reason he was able to take out the World No.1 from a set and break down.


“That's why I knew that the only chance is to go aggressive, and since I'm a good player, I was able to play good even playing kind of not my style, and that's actually—that's why it's a big victory, also,” he said.

The Russian, who is now at a career-high ranking of No.5 in the world and will face Hugo Dellien of Bolivia in the second round, says it aggressiveness is something he is concentrating on in practice.

“We are working a lot on this on practice, because of course you need to reinforce your strengths,” he said. “But you have to also work on your kind of, let's say, not weak parts, but things that you need to improve.
