Top-seeded Garbiñe Muguruza has been forced to withdraw from San Jose due to a right arm injury. Muguruza will be replaced in the draw by lucky-loser Anna Blinkova who will play two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka tonight in second-round action.

“I’ve been feeling some pain in my right arm for a couple of days and realized I am not ready to play the match. I am very sorry for the fans and the tournament. Hopefully I can recover for the next events.” said Muguruza.

“We were really looking forward to seeing Garbiñe compete here at the tournament, but the players’ health must always be the number one priority,” said tournament director Vickie Gunnarsson. “She’s one of the WTA’s bright young stars and we hope she is able to recover quickly.”
