Del Potro Awarded US Open Wild Card

Juan Martin del Potro's inspired Rio run has vaulted him back into the US Open.

The 2009 US Open champion has been awarded a main-draw wild card into the Flushing Meadows major, the Associated Press reports.

Del Potro: Murray's Mind Was The Difference

The US Open begins on August 29th.

Del Potro, who toppled world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the Rio first round before knocking off 2008 gold-medal champion Rafael Nadal in the semifinals, staged an epic battle with Andy Murray in the gold-medal match before bowing in a four hour, two-minute epic.

The Olympic silver medalist headlines a wild card field that includes Olympic mixed doubles gold medal champion Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Olympic mixed doubles silver medalist Rajeev Ram.

Competing in just his fourth Open, del Potro became the first man to defeat Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the same Grand Slam tournament at the 2009 US Open.

In a Sunday semifinal, Del Potro dictated play in delivering a crushing 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, victory over Nadal, handing the wounded Australian Open champion his worst thrashing in a major match.

In a stirring, four hour, six-minute final played on a Monday afternoon, del Potro snapped Federer's 40-match US Open winning streak in scoring the biggest Flushing Meadows upset since a 20-year-old Marat Safin swept Pete Sampras in the 2000 final.

The USTA also awarded men's wild cards to Bjorn Fratangelo, Frances Tiafoe, Mackenzie McDonald, Michael Mmoh and Ernesto Escobedo.

Former US Open doubles champion Vania King, Danielle Collins, Kayla Day, Lauren Davis, Sofia Kenin and Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano, who upset Serena Williams in the 2012 Roland Garros in what remains the world No. 1's lone Grand Slam opening-round exit, all received women's main-draw wild cards.

The USTA issued wild cards into the qualifying tournament to 2009 U.S. Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin and Briton Laura Robson.
