Second Serve

Fabio Fognini has a propensity for ticking off opponents, umpires and fans alike, but here’s why we can’t stay mad at the Italian for too long—he’s an absolute wizard on a clay court! The half volley above, executed against one of Rafael Nadal’s most ornery, eggy forehands, is borderline mission impossible. How does Fognini deaden all the wicked spin and buzz of Nadal’s dipping forehand and drop it at an impossibly acute angle for a clean, set point-saving winner? We’ll never know.

The forehand below isn’t too bad, either.

Fognini may have offended some when he flew off the handle and starting jawing and pointing fingers at Nadal during a changeover during Sunday's bet-at-home Open final, but it doesn’t change the fact that he walked quite a few tennis tightropes and forced Nadal to deliver some very strong stuff to get the win.
