It was all part of Nadal's promotional appearance as global brand ambassador for Tommy Hilfiger underwear.
A billboard of Nadal taking nearly it all off has become a bit of a tourist attraction in Times Square.
On Wednesday night, Nadal faced Lleyton Hewitt in charity match at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy on Randall's Island. Hewitt prepared for that exhibition practicing with Roger Federer on Armstrong Stadium court at the US Open earlier in the afternoon.
The world No. 8 said despite a tight loss to good buddy Feliciano Lopez in Cincinnati last week, he believes he's lifted his level of play from earlier this season.
"My feeling today is that I am playing much better than most of the time in the season," Nadal told the media at the exhibition. "I have been losing matches that I should win. During the season there are some key moments that change the dynamic and I lost all the opportunities to change the dynamic in those key moments."
The two-time US Open champion said if he continues competing with passion, results will return.
"I am happy with the way I am practicing and I'm feeling well I can say," said Nadal. "Now I need to win. And I need to be impassioned. I need to keep working with the same intensity and passion and I believe the results will come back."
