World No. 4 Petra Kvitova is tempering her expectations for the North American hard-court swing due to a recent mononucleosis diagnosis. The two-time Wimbledon champion says she received the bad news while practicing in Monaco after this year’s Championships.

“I spent a few days off in Monaco as a vacation and then I was trying to practice a little bit," Kvitova told Courtney Nguyen of WTATennis.com. "Unfortunately I found out I was diagnosed with mono. So it's going to be a little tougher for me to practice in a good way."

The Czech says she’s been cleared by doctors to play at this week’s Rogers Cup, but adds that she’s had limited practice time.

When asked about her preparations for the hard court season Kvitova had the following to say: “Unfortunately it wasn’t really great. I found out that I had mono, so I have to really be careful what I’m doing now.”

She added: “I got permission to play some matches but I have to be really patient how I am doing everything.”

When asked if she was hoping for more consistency in the second half of the season in the above interview, Kvitova replied: “It’s really tough to say something about it. I really don’t know how it’s going to be. I practiced a little bit and of course it wasn’t as great as I wished.”

Kvitova said that while the news was bad, she was relieved to know the origins of the fatigue that had made the spring and summer tournaments difficult for her. She pulled out of Indian Wells and Miami before returning for Fed Cup in April and then winning Madrid in early May, but her results were poor from there. She reached the quarterfinals at Rome and the round of 16 at Roland Garros before being stunned by Jelena Jankovic in the third round at Wimbledon.

"I was just tested and probably I got the mono during the springtime this year," Kvitova told WTATennis.com "I still have a little bit of it. I'm still able to play. My doctor gave me permission to play. But of course I have to be worried about the practice and everything. I will try to be ready for the matches."
