Hewitt Starts Mentoring Role For Kyrgios Before US Open

Former World No. 1 and US Open champion Lleyton Hewitt has agreed to mentor rising Australian talent Nick Kyrgios as he prepares for the final major of the year.

ATP: Monfils, Simon Early Winners in Montreal

Per The Age, the Aussie veteran has agreed to help mentor and coach Kyrgios on a temporary basis during the summer North American hard court swing. Kyrgios split with his former coach Todd Larkham just before Wimbledon where the volatile young Aussie earned criticism for his on-court behavior and then for a surprise loss in Davis Cup.

Kyrgios, in his loss to Kazakhstan's Aleksandr Nedovyesov was heard muttering on court, "I don't want to be here."

Nil Kyrgios, his mother, believes her son can learn a lot from the two-time Grand Slam winner who is planning to compete at his last US Open.

"Definitely (Hewitt will be there) for Montreal and Cincinnati and depending on whether he plays the US Open or not, he'll be there anyway. What Nick doesn't like is when people who haven't been in that situation give him advice, but he'll listen to someone like Lleyton."

She also hopes Hewitt's advice will help her son when Australia faces Great Britain in the Davis Cup semifinal just after the US Open.

"Lleyton's been through everything that Nick is going through. We touched base on it after Davis Cup because we knew Nick wasn't in a good head space, he just wasn't dealing well with the negative feedback." She added, "Lleyton was available and fortunately in a position where he's just about to finish (his career). He wanted to mentor these boys because he's been in their shoes before. I think it's great for Nick to have him there."

Hewitt and Kyrgios are scheduled to play doubles together in Montreal this week.
