Federer, Nadal Could Meet in Cincy Quarterfinal

For those that have been pining away for the 34th installment of the Federer-Nadal rivalry, Cincinnati could be the place. 2nd-seeded Roger Federer and 8th-seeded Rafael Nadal have been drawn into the same quarter at next week’s Western and Southern Open.

The pair of rivals have not met since the 2014 Australian Open. Nadal has won their last five meetings but he has not faced Federer with a ranking outside of the Top-5 since the 2005 Miami Masters.

Nadal owns a 9-6 edge over Federer on hard courts, which includes victories in their last four meetings. They have met once in Cincinnati, with Nadal claiming a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory in 2013.

Federer is a six-time and defending champion at Cincinnati. He defeated David Ferrer in last year’s final in three sets.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic could face Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals, if the seeds hold. Djokovic is bidding to be the first player in history to have won all of the nine Masters 1000 titles this year in Cincinnati. He owns a 22-10 record at the event but has lost in all four of his finals at Cincy.

The other quarterfinals at Cincinnati, if the seeds hold, would be Berdych-Nishikori (top half – winner would face Djokovic-Wawrinka winner) and Murray-Cilic (lower half – winner would face Federer-Nadal winner).

Djokovic could face Gilles Muller after a first-round bye in the second round. He could face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the third round.

Federer could face Pablo Cuevas in the second round after his bye. He could face Jack Sock or Kevin Anderson in the third round.

Nadal’s draw is one of the trickiest. He could face Jeremy Chardy in the second round and Milos Raonic in the third round.

Notable first-rounders at Cincy are Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. Fernando Verdasco, Milos Raonic vs. Feliciano Lopez, and John Isner vs. Sam Querrey.
