Second Serve - A Tennis Now Blog

Second Serve

In the third set of her 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(2) victory over Yanina Wickmayer at the Western and Southern Open on Tuesday, Italy’s Sara Errani got into a nice verbal tussle with chair umpire Richard Haigh over one of the worst overrules that we’ve seen all year.

Haigh overrules a serve at 3-all, deuce in the third set, a fraction after Wickmayer makes contact with her forehand crosscourt return.

Things get a little weird after that because the line judge never makes a call on Wickmayer’s forehand, but Errani, clearly thinking it was out, makes her case that she should be awarded the point because Haigh's overrule came after Wickmayer hit the shot, and therefore had no impact on her error.

But was it an error? The shot actually looks too close to call, so, as Courtney Nguyen over at SI mentions in her post, maybe Wickmayer had something to argue about as well. (Another idea: It was clear in our opinion that the call came after Wickmayer made contact, so why not make this a challengable item?)

In any case, it was entertaining watching Errani let her emotions out on the deserving Haigh, who really had no business overruling on that ball. Making a horrible call is one thing, but an overrule like that? It’s preposterous!

Errani would go on to win the next point, but eventually lost the game to fall behind 4-3 before rallying to win the deciding set in a tiebreaker. After the match, perhaps placated by the victory, Errani had the decency to shake Haigh’s hand and let bygones be bygones.

Errani will face Sabine Lisicki in the second round in Cincinnati.
