Monfils' Airborne Cross-Court Winner
You just have to love Gael Monfils. One minute he’s loopy, drinking Coca-Cola courtside (this is no joke, people) and looking like he might have to retire:
Next thing you know he’s flying through the air like Superman. (see above)>>>
The flying forehand that Monfils rips during his 7-5 6-3 6-2 victory over Colombia’s Alejandro Gonzalez is, simply put, a thing of beauty. The Frenchman takes a routine ball that most players would do routine things with, and proceeds to get about a foot and a half of hangtime before snapping at the ball violently as his legs to a scissor kick on the follow-through.
Best of all, is the cool, casual, helicopter hand gesture to let the Grandstand crowd it’s okay to go nuts.
Don’t worry Gael, they don’t need you to tell them to go nuts.
Monfils seeded 20, will face either Richard Gasquet or Paolo Lorenzi in the third round. His best performance at the US Open came in 2010 when he reached the quarterfinals.
